The ideal accompaniment to a John Smedley classic knit comes from the British brand Walsh who has been manufacturing high quality, classic footwear designs since 1961. Our MD Ian Maclean was certainly pleased with his pair, saying ‘The talented craftspeople at www.normanwalshuk.com have recently sent me my very first pair of custom design Walsh trainers. Built on a Pennine Adder sole, I requested a navy and teal blue design which retain only the single white stripe as a highlight – they look fantastic! I wanted this design to wear with my navy blue cotton suit made by Pokit, as I think that they will make the perfect accompaniment. I’ll certainly be wearing my new Walsh’s for my presentation at the ‘Meet the Manufacturer’ conference, organised by Make It British, in early June (www.makeitbritish.co.uk).’ The retro sports footwear company was started by Norman Walsh after he took on an apprenticeship at Bolton based J.W. Foster where he was able to advance his knowledge and skills. His high level of craftsmanship was soon recognised within the sports industry and he was later commissioned to produce running shoes for the 1948 British Olympic team. Since then, the brand has been taken over by footwear enthusiasts Jonathan and Dennis Crompton who effectively combine the heritage of the brand with modern influences. True to the brand’s roots, their factory is based in the northern town of Bolton which encompasses a small team of craftsman who intricately produce the footwear designs. The exquisite range of styles offer comfort, innovative design, vivid colours and longevity as well as allowing the wearer to possess a piece of historic craftsmanship. Popular amongst sportsman and the trend conscious, Walsh constructs footwear for a variety of sports including football, rugby, fell-running, boxing and track and field as well as producing casual trainers for everyday use.
